Overview

Overview

Smart Pest Traps are solar-powered, camera-equipped pheromone traps that photograph the sticky board on a schedule, run on-device AI to count and identify each captured insect by species, and stream the data and the photo back to a cloud pest-pressure map. Scouts and IPM managers get push alerts the moment a block crosses its action threshold.

Built for orchards, vineyards, row crops, greenhouses and grain stores that already use sticky / delta / funnel traps but want to stop physically walking every trap every week — turning 12 hours of scouting into a 5-minute morning dashboard check while catching outbreaks days earlier.

  • Auto-counts & auto-IDs — no more squinting at sticky boards, no more spreadsheets
  • 62-species classifier — codling moth, apple maggot, leafroller, brown stink bug, fruit fly, thrips, whitefly, aphid, plus regional pest packs
  • Pressure heatmap — block-by-block visualisation triggers spray decisions on threshold, not calendar
  • Lure-replenishment alerts — never get caught with an expired pheromone again

How It Works

The diagram above shows the four layers of a Smart Pest Trap deployment. Hover any module to see the live telemetry it produces.

  1. Camera Pest Trap — a delta or bucket-style trap with sticky board, replaceable pheromone lure cartridge, an 8 MP IR-cut camera, IR LED flash, solar panel, battery and LoRa / 4G radio. Hangs in the canopy and photographs the board every 2–6 hours.
  2. AI Vision ID — a YOLOv8 detector + species classifier runs on edge or cloud, drawing a bounding box on every insect, naming the species and assigning a confidence score, then aggregating into a per-block pressure map.
  3. Cloud Dashboard — every trap across every block rolls up into a 30-day trend, a pressure heatmap, season-threshold tracking and an audit trail of photos for compliance/insurance.
  4. Scout & Alerts — IPM scouts and farm managers get push and SMS the moment a threshold is breached, with one-tap actions to schedule a spray, order a lure refill, or dispatch a scout to verify in person.

A continuous feedback loop pushes model retrains (new local species), updated thresholds, lure-refill schedules and firmware back to the trap — visible as the purple stream along the bottom of the diagram.

Features

  • Auto-photography — 8 MP IR-cut camera, scheduled 2–6 h or motion-triggered
  • On-device species ID — 62-species model, 100+ ms edge inference, 90–96% accuracy on common pests
  • Pheromone-agnostic — swappable lure cartridge fits standard Trécé, Suterra, Pherobank, Russell IPM dispensers
  • Lure-life model — temperature- and time-weighted expiry; alert at 7 days remaining
  • Pressure heatmap — block-by-block visualisation with action-threshold colouring
  • Custom species packs — regional pest models (Mediterranean fruit fly, fall armyworm, spotted wing drosophila) added on request
  • Solar-powered — 5 W panel + 6 Ah battery, 21-day no-sun reserve
  • Open data — REST, MQTT, CSV; export to FAR program, AgWorld, Climate FieldView, Trimble Ag

Use Cases

  • Pome & stone fruit orchards — codling moth, apple maggot, oriental fruit moth, cherry fruit fly
  • Vineyards — grapevine moth, leafhopper, spotted wing drosophila
  • Berry & soft fruit — spotted wing drosophila, raspberry beetle, thrips
  • Vegetable row crops — fall armyworm, cabbage looper, diamondback moth
  • Greenhouses — whitefly, thrips, leafminer (yellow / blue sticky cards)
  • Grain storage — Indian meal moth, weevils inside silo and warehouse traps
  • Public health / quarantine — Mediterranean & oriental fruit fly surveillance for biosecurity
