Overview

Overview

SGT Driver Fatigue Monitor is a dashboard-mounted, driver-facing IR camera plus on-device computer-vision module that continuously scores drowsiness, distraction and microsleep risk for commercial vehicle drivers. It is built for long-haul trucking, intercity bus, container hauliers, mining haul roads and ride-hail fleets — anywhere a single nodding-off moment can end in a fatality.

The unit ships as a small in-cab device with an infrared camera (works at night with no visible light), an embedded neural processor that runs face-mesh and eye-aspect-ratio models locally, an audible buzzer, and a 4G/LTE link back to the fleet cloud. When PERCLOS, blink rate, yawn frequency or head-pose drift cross policy thresholds, the driver hears an in-cab alert in under 300 ms and the fleet manager receives a push notification with a 12-second video clip of the event.

  • PERCLOS + EAR + yawn + head-pose — four fatigue signals fused into one drowsiness score
  • Edge inference on a low-power NPU — no video leaves the cab unless an event fires
  • Driver-privacy — only event clips are uploaded, normal driving never leaves the device
  • Tamper & identity protection — covered-lens detection, driver-ID via face embedding

How It Works

  1. In-Cab Camera — an IR-illuminated 1080p camera mounted on the A-pillar or dashboard captures the driver's face at 30 fps. Works through sunglasses and at night.
  2. CV Inference — the on-board NPU runs face-detection, 468-point face-mesh, eye-aspect-ratio (EAR), PERCLOS (percentage of eyelid closure over time), yawn-detection and head-pose estimation. Inference latency ~18 ms. A drowsiness score is produced once per second.
  3. Fleet Cloud — event metadata (timestamp, driver-ID, score, location) and the 12-second clip around each event are uploaded over LTE. Managers see live status of every vehicle on a single map and a 7-day fatigue trend per driver.
  4. Manager / Driver Alerts — in-cab buzzer fires immediately; manager push notification within seconds with a Play / Acknowledge / Call-Driver flow; SMS escalation if the manager doesn't acknowledge within the configured window.

Features

  • Multi-signal fatigue model — PERCLOS, EAR, blink-rate, yawn-frequency, head-pose, gaze-direction
  • Distraction detection — phone-use, smoking, eating, looking away > 3 s
  • Seat-belt & identity — face-embedding driver-ID, seat-belt presence, lens-cover tamper alert
  • Configurable policy — per-fleet, per-route or per-driver thresholds; quiet hours; coaching mode vs alarm mode
  • Event video — 12 s clip (6 s pre / 6 s post), uploaded only on event, AES-256 encrypted
  • Privacy-by-design — no continuous video off the device, no audio capture by default
  • Driver coaching app — weekly self-review with personal fatigue score and improvement tips
  • Fleet API — REST + webhook for integration with telematics platforms (Geotab, Samsara, custom)

Use Cases

  • Long-haul trucking — overnight runs where regulatory rest hours alone do not catch fatigue
  • Intercity bus & coach — passenger-carrying duty-of-care, regulator reporting
  • Mining & quarry haul roads — repetitive routes, monotony-driven microsleep risk
  • Container & port hauliers — short turns but long hours, multiple drivers per shift
  • Ride-hail & taxi fleets — late-night shifts, gig drivers stacking platforms
  • Insurer-mandated installs — fleets installing under premium-reduction programmes
