ELD Device
Overview
SGT ELD Device is an FMCSA-style Electronic Logging Device that automates Hours-of-Service (HoS) record keeping, Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR), and IFTA fuel-tax mileage for commercial motor vehicles. It plugs into the ECU (J1939 for heavy trucks, OBD-II for light) and pairs with an in-cab tablet so drivers no longer keep paper logbooks and dispatchers stop chasing missing pre-trip checks.
Designed for fleets that must satisfy a regulator (US DOT / FMCSA, Canadian ELD mandate, custom national rule-sets), the device runs a tamper-evident, SHA-256-chained log on board, buffers events when the cellular link is down, and can hand off a 7-day RODS export to a roadside inspector over web-service, email or a USB stick attached to the OBD port.
- Automatic HoS — duty status from J1939 / OBD-II, no manual button-pushing at start of drive
- DVIR pre-trip / post-trip — guided checklist, photo of defects, push to workshop
- IFTA mileage — per-state miles computed from GPS + odometer, quarterly export ready
- Tamper-evident — every event signed and chained; edits captured separately as an audit record
How It Works
- In-Cab ELD Unit — small device hard-wired to the OBD-II or 9-pin J1939 connector, paired over Bluetooth to a driver tablet. The tablet displays the four-quadrant duty clock (Drive / On-Duty / Sleeper / Off), HoS countdowns, DVIR checklist and IFTA mileage map.
- Rule Engine — reads ECU PGNs for speed, odometer, engine-on / engine-off. A state machine auto-promotes to Driving above 5 mph for 3 minutes; auto-demotes to On-Duty after 5 minutes stopped. Driver can edit with reason-code, edits are logged separately.
- Compliance Cloud — receives event stream, aggregates per fleet and per driver, produces FMCSA-format CSA reports, IFTA Q1–Q4 packets, DVIR archives, and driver-fitness dashboards.
- Driver / Safety Manager — driver tablet shows break-in countdown and rest-stop suggestions; safety manager gets HoS warnings before a violation, and any DVIR defect is auto-routed to the maintenance workshop.
Features
- FMCSA-registered ELD profile — supports 8-day, 14-day and 16-hour exemptions; sleeper-berth split; adverse-driving
- Multi-rule-set — US FMCSA, Canadian ELD, custom national HoS profile (configurable)
- Roadside transfer — eRODS web-service, email, or USB-via-OBD output for inspector
- DVIR with photo — branded checklist per vehicle class, photo upload, defect routed to workshop
- IFTA quarterly — state-crossings detected by GPS-on-network, fuel purchase reconciliation
- Tamper-evident log — SHA-256 hash chain, edits captured as separate events with reason
- Offline buffering — 32 MB on-device log, 30+ days without network
- Driver coaching — harsh-brake, hard-cornering and idle-time events for safety score
Use Cases
- US interstate trucking — FMCSA-compliant ELD with eRODS hand-off and CSA reporting
- Canadian fleets — Transport Canada ELD mandate certified profile
- Passenger-carrier bus & coach — sleeper-berth split logging, 10-hour daily limit
- Owner-operators — single-vehicle install with self-service dashboard and IFTA export
- Cross-border trucking — automatic rule-set switch on border-crossing geofence
- Yard / construction fleets — DVIR-only configuration for non-public-road vehicles
